I know, I know, I said I would have this series of posts out every Wednesday, but if I told you all the cool things that are going on with Jamo Records, it would be a full post in itself. I may start working on that. I’m enjoying writing this series though. It’s been fun researching these different Hip Hop artists. I’ve decided I’m going to do a series on Rock next!
Here’s the 5th post in the series and I’m pretty excited about this one. Unlike the last 4 of the hip hop artists on fire, this artist kind of captures a pop vibe. It’s hard to explain. I mean, he’s hip hop, no doubt about that. It’s easier to explain if you just listen to his stuff. And don’t forget to comment!
YNW Melly – #5 Artist On Fire
YNW Melly’s career is moving so fast, I just had to rewrite this whole blurb because everything I had to say about him last week is already out of date. After impressing us throughout 2018 with songs that paired addictive melodies with brutally honest songwriting (“Murder On My Mind” is a must-listen), the 19-year-old Florida rapper opened 2019 with his biggest moment yet when he dropped a Cole Bennett-directed video for “Mixed Personalities,” featuring Kanye West. After closely studying hip-hop’s biggest stars throughout his childhood, he is now collaborating with his idols. “I watched every video they did, every mistake they made, every good thing they did, [and] every sound they made,” he explains in a self-released documentary. “I know that shit. I know how to do it. How the fuck can I not be your favorite rapper?” Good point, Melly. —Eric Skelton
Younger Years & Earlier Life
YNW Melly was born Jamell Maurice Demons, on May 1, 1999. When he was 20 years old, he was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. If convicted he could get a life. Melly did some time but his incarceration hasn’t stopped him from dropping new music. While awaiting trial in a double homicide case, the Florida-bred rapper has released an album titled Melly Vs. Melvin.
The LP is Melly’s second project of 2019, which he began with January’s We All Shine mixtape. Since then, the up-and-coming artist’s circumstances have changed dramatically as he was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Despite facing double homicide charges, YNW Melly is moving forward with his new album Melly Vs. Melvin. On November 18, 2018, the currently incarcerated rapper announced the project would arrive on Friday (November 22). Melly revealed Melly Vs. Melvin was in the works in August, six months after his arrest. The Florida native has been behind bars since February for his alleged involvement in the murders of two of his associates, YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser. The State of Florida is reportedly seeking the death penalty and confidence it can “prove beyond a reasonable doubt” Melly murdered both men for financial gain. During a prison phone call with his family in May, Melly said he doesn’t think the charges will stick as he continued putting out music. That same month, he popped up on Lil Keed’s “Pull Up” featuring Lil Uzi Vert.
Then in July, Melly’s team dropped “Dangerously in Love (772 Love Pt. 2),” which was inspired by the title track on Beyoncé’s debut album, Dangerously In Love.
Melly’s Definitely On Fire
So Melly’s career is definitely on fire and that’s why he made this list of up and coming Hip Hop artists on FIRE! As of March 2019, Melly has amassed over 200 million streams on Spotify with over 10 million monthly listeners. His most-streamed song is “Murder on My Mind“, which was originally released as a single before being added to I Am You.
The following Instagram post was accompanied by the album’s cover art, which features two photos of Melly — one with a scowl on his face and dreads and the other featuring a shorter haircut and blinging smile.
