Johnathan Michael Porter (born January 20, 1997), known professionally as Blueface, is an American rapper and songwriter.
In October 2018, after releasing the music video for his song “Respect My Crypn'”, he became a viral internet meme due to his off-beat style of rapping and his tattoo of Benjamin Franklin on the side of his face. In November 2018, he signed to Cash Money West, the West Coast branch of Birdman’s Cash Money Records label. In 2019, a remix of his song “Thotiana”, featuring Cardi B and YG, became his most successful single to date, peaking at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Early Years
BlueFace was born January 20, 1997, in Los Angeles, California but he grew up in Mid City in West Los Angeles. He settled down in San Fernando Valley and attended Arleta High School and even joined the football team. There he became the star quarterback leading the team to an East Valley League championship in 2014. He threw 1,234 yard and 17 touchdowns in 2013 and 1,724 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2014. He went onto play for Fayetteville State University but only played there for a couple of years when he left in 2016.
BlueFace began rapping in 2017. His name is a throwback to his ties to the School Yard Crips street gang. In June 2018, Blueface released his first full-length project, Famous Cryp and in September after the song helped him build a local following in Cali, he released his second EP, Two Coccy, onto Soundcloud and Spotify.
Then in October 2018, he released a music video for his song, “Respect By Crypn”, on WorldstartHipHop’s YouTube Channel. Shortly thereafter the song was posted to Twitter where it became viral due to Blueface’s off-beat flow and voice.
On November 16, 2018, at approximately 8:30 PM local time, Porter was approached by a man at a Chevron gas station, who proceeded to attempt to rob Porter. Porter fired shots back at the man’s vehicle and was later arrested and charged with shooting at an occupied vehicle, a felony in the state of California. Porter was released on $50,000 bail on November 18. Porter was also arrested on February 1, 2019 for felony gun possession after the police allegedly recovered a loaded, unregistered handgun in his possession.
In December 2018, BlueFace again went viral due to an acoustic video with Einer Bankz previewing his new son, “Bleed It”. He released the song two days later, including a video on the Lyrical Lemonade YouTube channel. That video gained him over 2 million views in the first 24 hours of its release! Now, 26 million views later, it looks like BlueFace is figuring out how to turn his internet buzz into a viable career, and artists like YG and Drake are already reaching out for collaborations. We’ll be seeing a lot of Blueface in 2019. —Eric Skelton
BlueFace has one child, a son named Javaugh, who was born in 2017. Before BlueFace emerged into the rap industry he was a devoted stay-at-home dad, who worked temporary jobs just to make it. Now, look at how things have changed! He is expected to drop his debut album, “Find the Beat”, which pokes fun at the people who say the 2019 XXL Freshman is never on the beat when he raps. The cover art features Blueface drawn as the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, while some of his rap peers including DaBaby appear as other characters from the famous film.
